Candles During the Holidays Can Cause HVAC Issue

In my mind, burning candles conjures a romantic night in a cozy spot, the right music a glass of wine and my favorite person on the planet.

This is the most favorite of imaginings when it comes to candles.

The other thing candles bring to mind are the holidays. A winter’s night with the house all aglow as Christmas candles flicker and fill the air with sweet smells. And again, this has everything to do with my favorite person on the planet. She happens to be my wife. So, I lucked out there. Man, my wife goes to town with the candles during the holiday season. They start making their first appearance when Thanksgiving is a about a week away. However, once the turkey bones go in the trash, the candles come out in full force. This is my cue to protect the HVAC. Not the sentence you were expecting there right? I know, it sounds like a weird reaction but, it’s the truth. As soon as the candles come out en masse, I go to the big box hardware to get me a couple of cases of HVAC air filters. I learned the hard way that this is a very important thing to do. All the wax being burnt from the candles winds up on the air filter. The wax actually will coat the HVAC air filter thus critically restricting all important air flow. I nearly choked out my HVAC the first year we were married. I had never even considered where the paraffin wax went as it burned. Now, I change the air filter almost weekly during the holidays.
